Join us for an in-depth discussion of the Russia-Ukraine war, facilitated by Buzzfeed writer and CBC podcaster Elamin Abdelmahmoud, Artsci'11, and Steffonn Chan, Sc’07, Queen's Alumni Germany Branch representative. Hear Queen's experts Dr. Zsuzsa Csergő, Professor, Department of of Political Studies at Queen's University, Dr. Nicolas Lamp, Associate Professor, Faculty of Law at Queen's University, and Dr. Thomas Hughes, PhD'21, Post-Doctoral Fellow, Centre for International and Defence Policy at Queen's University, walk us through the history of the situation between Russia and Ukraine, what this conflict means for the world in a geopolitical context, and what impacts people might see around the world. This event will feature a Q&A where our panelists will answer audience questions. His primary areas of research are on confidence-building, arms control, deterrence, and strategic culture. Thomas defended his dissertation, The Art of War Games: The Political Effects of Military Exercises in Europe, 1975-2018 in August 2021. His work was the Queen’s University nomination for the 2022 Canadian Association for Graduate Studies ProQuest Distinguished Dissertation Awards, which recognises a dissertation that made “an unusually significant contribution to their disciplines.” He also co-edited the 2018 volume North American Strategic Defense in the 21st Century, and has published further research on military exercises and NATO. Thomas gained his MA from the Josef Korbel School of International Studies, Denver, and has also worked for the UN Inter-regional Crime and Justice Research Institute. Dr. Zsuzsa Csergő (Professor, Department of Political Studies @Queen's University) Professor Zsuzsa Csergő (PhD in Political Science, The George Washington University, 2000) specializes in the study of nationalism in contemporary European politics, with particular expertise on post-communist Central and Eastern Europe. Before joining the Queen’s faculty, Dr. Csergő was Assistant Professor of Political Science and Coordinator of the Women’s Leadership Program in U.S. and International Politics at the George Washington University. From 2013-2019, she was President of the Association for the Study of Nationalities (ASN), the leading international scholarly association in the field of nationalism and ethnicity studies. Currently, she is Director of the association’s online initiative “Virtual ASN.” Dr. Nicolas Lamp (Associate Professor, Faculty of Law @Queen's University) Dr. Nicolas Lamp joined the Faculty of Law at Queen’s University in 2014 and is cross-appointed to the School of Policy Studies. He is the Director of the Annual Queen’s Institute on Trade Policy, a professional training course for Canadian trade officials, and the Associate Academic Director of the International Law Programs, an eight-week summer course at the Bader International Study Centre at Herstmonceux castle in England. Prior to joining Queen’s, Nicolas worked as a Dispute Settlement Lawyer at the Appellate Body Secretariat of the World Trade Organization. Nicolas received his PhD in Law from the London School of Economics and Political Science. His current research focuses on competing narratives about the winners and losers from economic globalization. His co-authored book (with Anthea Roberts) on "Six Faces of Globalization: Who Wins, Who Loses, and Why It Matters" was published by Harvard University Press in September 2021. Steffonn Chan, Sc'07 (Host, Representative @Queen's Alumni Germany Branch) Steffonn Chan, Sc'07, was born in Hong Kong, moved to Canada as a 4-year old boy, and graduated from Queen’s in 2007 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. Since graduation, he has lived in the US and in Germany, which he has called home for 11 years. In this time, he has also worked in over a dozen other countries worldwide spanning Europe, the Middle-East, Asia, and South America. Steffonn has done business in Ukraine, and has the interesting experience of being an invited speaker to an international conference held in Moscow a number of years ago. Currently, as well as being a father to a super energetic boy, Steffonn consults part-time, and also leads Deutsche Bahn International Operations’ PMO in its execution of international greenfield programs.
